Philip Roth wins The Man Booker International Prize! What is The Man Booker International Prize? It's the literary award presented once every two years to a living author for a body of work published "originally in English or widely available in translation in the English language." The prize is worth £60,000 (or about $97,000) to the winner. Philip Roth's first book, Goodbye, Columbus (actually a novella and 5 short stories) won the National Book Award in 1960 and Roth has continued writing to critical acclaim ever since, in fact a career that has spanned 50 years!

Ah, you know, I still haven't read any Philip Roth which I feel bad about. I feel like he's a required classic, at this point and I just haven't made it there. Guess there's no time like this time!

Well, I've never bitten that apple either, but as you said there's no time like the present. I am going to start with that very first book of his- Goodbye, Columbus. AND, BTW, not everyone thinks Philip Roth deserves such praise- one of the Man Booker International judges quit after learning that he made the short list! She thought that Mr. Roth kept repeating in various forms that same old same old in all his books.
