A Daily Dose of Literature
Delivered in your email!
Do you check your email every day? Do you love a good book? (Ok I already know the answer to that one!) In our busy schedules sometimes it's hard to fit in everything we'd love to do, but what if you could open your email and there was part of the first chapter of Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen... Would you read it?... Especially if it only took 5 minutes? That is what DailyLit.com is all about.... Everyday DailyLit delivers in your mailbox part of a book of your choice from their site. And each day those literary emails are under 5 minutes long! So you can squeeze in some great reading when your time is limited. More time? Want to read a bit more? No problem- you can request more installments after you're done reading. And DailyLit is RSS friendly- so you can send your "book" to your iPhone or Blackberry! (could not send it to my Kindle...)
DailyLit was created because the people behind DailyLit spent hours each day on email but could not find the time to read a book. Now the books come by email. Problem solved...."We got the idea for DailyLit after the New York Times serialized a few classic works in special supplements a few summers ago. We wound up reading books that we had always meant to simply by virtue of making them part of our daily routine of reading the newspaper. The only thing we do more consistenly than read the paper is read email."
There are listed 597 classic titles alone! With over 1000 classics and contemporary books available. Many books are free (the classics that are in the public domain) , and some books that have a fee attached to them. You can always get free sample installments to try out any "read for fee" book first. All the particulars of a book are clearly displayed prior to you requesting a book. Including how many installments it will take to finish the book! Just to let you know War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy is only 663 installments! DailyLit also has what they call The Big Read, which is their highlighted pick that they encourage EVERYone to read and get in on a great conversation about. Either online or anywhere you chat about books! And it's Free!
You just need an email address to get started! And not only can you start reading a book in your email, you can also "gift" a subscription! I sent the story Heaven - Hell by Jhumpa Lahiri from her book Unaccustomed Earth to my sister in law! If you register there are forums to get involved in and you can rate & review.
Right now the thriller Paranoia by best selling author Joseph Finder is available for FREE! And so is the story Heaven - Hell written by Pulizer Prize winning author Jhumpa Lahiri from her collection of stories, Unaccustomed Earth. Some of the great classics available (for free) are Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, and Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. This sounds interesting - I am going to check it out!
Someone, I don't know who...sent me a gift of Moby Dick from DailyLit.com. It's a great concept and seems to work quite well. It takes very little time to read the small portion each day. It lends itself well to slow contemplation of each sentence and better appreciation of their meaning both on and beneath the surface. And it doesn't interfere with the rest of my reading. Sure, it may take me 250 days to read moby Dick, but then again, if I put on my shelf it could take me longer than that to get to it. Neat idea, I'm enjoying it. Give it a try.
